Backpack Sprayer: 8 Tips for Spraying Pesticides

Michelle - November 9, 2020

A backpack sprayer is a convenient tool for various applications, but many people still have problems using it. Calibrating your backpack sprayer properly will allow you to get the job done with less time and effort. Here are helpful tips for spraying pesticides using a backpack sprayer.

Improper use of a backpack sprayer may lead to harmed crops, environmental contamination, and wasted money and resources. If you area first time user, or even if you've done it a couple of times, you will find this article helpful.

What is a backpack sprayer?

A standard backpack sprayer has a tank, a pump, and a spray wand with one or more nozzles. Its portability, transportability, and ease of use make the sprayer a versatile sprayer. This type of sprayer is often used in small acreages, spot spraying, and hard-to-reach locations.

Spraying pesticides using a backpack sprayer

Below are 8 tips for pesticide spraying that will give you an idea of how to use a backpack sprayer efficiently and effectively.

1. Read and review the instructional manual.

Reading and reviewing the instructions manual help you understand a product or machine better. Since every backpack sprayer is unique, it is necessary to be familiar with its function, maintenance, operation, and calibration.

2. Pick the right spray nozzle.

There are a lot of spray nozzle types available, and each type is designed for a specific purpose. To effectively carry out the task, choosing the right spray nozzle is important.

Nozzles used in agriculture can be fine, medium, coarse, or very coarse droplets. Spray nozzle helps regulate the flow of the liquid, which allows the spread of droplets in a specific pattern.

It also determines the amount of solution applied to an area, uniformity of solution, and coverage of the application.

3. Calibrate your backpack sprayer properly.

"Calibration" means determining a sprayer's output, so a known amount of spray solution is applied to a given area. Applicators must know this if they wish to use an herbicide at a specific dosage.

Check the gallon-per-acre application rate by the backpack sprayer. Pesticide spraying depends on your walking speed, spray pressure, and spray nozzle. If one of these factors changes, it will affect the calibration.

4. Pay attention to spray pressure and drift.

Sudden changes in spray pressure might also affect application rate, droplet size, and spray pattern. Spraying in at low-pressure results in the narrow and insufficient overlap between nozzle patterns. There can be some areas that might be left untreated.

Spraying at high pressure will increase the number of drift-prone droplets. Whatever the pressure may be, make sure to maintain it throughout the spraying session, and have it uniformly distributed.

Don't spray if you notice that the wind will cause drift. Not only because it is too risky and hazardous for your neighbor's field, but also because spray drift wastes more chemicals than we could ever imagine.

Maybe it is better if we carry out the task when the drift potential is less. In addition, it would be better if you carry extra nozzles, washers, and other components, to address problems that may arise during spraying.

5. Be safe.

Manufacturers formulate their pesticides for a specific use or application. It pays to check that what you load into your sprayer is what you need to get the job done. Also, read the safety precautions and the risks of using the product.

Wearing protective equipment is necessary whenever you are about to be in contact with certain chemicals. Applicators must wear long-sleeve shirts and pants, gloves, goggles, and shoes, and socks. Look for a gear that minimizes the risk of contact with the chemical solution.

6. Stir the pesticide occasionally while working.

It is possible that the pesticide product might separate or settle down at the bottom. Stir the solution from time to time to maximize your pesticide.

7. Keep track of your session.

Keeping track of your spraying session helps you evaluate if your methods and strategies are effective. If you have noticed some factors that affect your calibration, you can change it right away.

8. Ensure the proper maintenance of your backpack sprayer.

Bear in mind that the longevity of the backpack sprayer depends on its maintenance. After every use, make sure to thoroughly clean and rinse the backpack sprayer.

Clean the filter, the backpack sprayer, and the spray nozzle. Rinse them properly so that each component will be free of any debris. Store your backpack sprayer away from direct sunlight to maintain its integrity.
